BGMEA building must be demolished: SC
Dhaka: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday rejected a review plea filed by Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) against the apex court verdict to demolish its headquarters at Hatirjheel in Dhaka.
Following the court’s rejection, there is no bar on trouncing down the building.
A four-member Appellate Division panel headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha issued the order after concluding hearing on the review petition.
The other members of the bench are Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Justice Hassan Foyez Siddique, and Justice Mirza Hossain Haider.
Attorney General Mahbube Alam conducted the hearing as state prosecutor while Advocate Kamrul Haque Siddique was the lawyer for BGMEA.
Earlier on 2 June, 2016, the apex court upheld a High Court order that asked for demolishing the BGMEA headquarters building at Hatirjheel area in Dhaka at the cost of the trade body, declaring it as illegal.
A four-member Appellate Division panel of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha had passed the order, rejecting an appeal filed by BGMEA against the High Court verdict of 2011.
The High Court in 2011 ordered to demolish the building, terming it as cancer for the scenic Hatirjheel project.
