Dhaka: A man was killed and five others were injured in a road accident at Karwan Bazar in Dhaka at about 6:00pm on Wednesday.

Witnesses said the accident took place in front of CA Bhaban at Karwan Bazar as two Gabtoli-bound buses of route 22/A (previously 8) were racing to overtake one another as the road was relatively traffic-free on the public holiday.

At one point the two speeding buses violently sideswiped each other leaving one of these overturned.

The accident left the driver’s assistant of the overturned bus dead on the spot. Woman, children, and an Ittefaq journalist were among the five injured, who could not be named immediately.

The injured persons were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The accident completely halted vehicular movement on the capital’s main thoroughfare for almost an hour.

Traffic on the road resumed after police removed the totaled bus from the scene crowded with onlookers and newsmen.

Although the government promised to take actions against reckless driving by unlicensed drivers, casualties from road accidents are still common on the roads of the capital as well as on the long-route highways.
