Cricketer Arafat Sunny to appear before court today
Dhaka: National Cricket Team player Arafat Sunny will be produced before a Cyber Crime Tribunal on Wednesday in a case filed against him for blackmailing a woman through exposing her personal photos on social networking site Facebook.
Sunny’s counsel M Jewel Ahmed told NTV Online Arafat Sunny will be placed before the tribunal for hearing on a bail petition.
He said earlier on 9 March, a Dhaka court granted bail for one month to Sunny in a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. If the tribunal grants bail to the cricketer on Wednesday, there will be no bar on Sunny’s release.
Cricketer Sunny is now at the jail for the case filed under ICT act.
Earlier, on 15 February, Bangladesh Cyber Crime Tribunal rejected bail to Arafat Sunny. However, Sunny’s lawyer filed bail petition with the same court. Court fixed 15 March for conducting hearing on the petition.
Nasrin Sultana, a friend of Sunny, filed the case against the cricketer under the ICT Act on 5 January.
On 22 January, the Mohammadpur police arrested Bangladesh national team off-spinner Sunny in Aminbazar.
Besides, two more cases were filed against Sunny and his mother on charge of demanding Tk 20 lakh as dowry and a case of Dhaka Women Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Court‐4 on 23 January and 1 February, respectively.
Arafat Sunny is a left-arm off-spinner and left-handed batsman of Bangladesh National Cricket team. The 30-year-old player made his debut for Dhaka Division in 2001. He broke into Bangladesh’s one-day international (ODI) side in early 2014.
He took 2-31 in his first outing against Sri Lanka, but his two best performances came in November 2014 when he took 4-27 and 4-29 in two matches against Zimbabwe, in a good show of form ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
