Dhaka: The High Court on Sunday issued a rule asking the government to explain why the authorities concerned should not be given directives to hold Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) polls.

The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman issued the rule following a writ petition.

The HC also issued another rule asking the relevant authorities to explain why the failure of holding the DUCSU polls in the last 26 years should not be declared illegal.

The Education Secretary, Dhaka University Vice-chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Registrar and Proctor have been made respondents to the rule, which is returnable in four weeks.

Earlier in the day, former Dhaka University Central Students Union vice-president Sultan Mohammad Mansur, former general secretary Mostaq Hossain and Zafrul Hasan Nadim filed the writ petition before the court seeking steps to hold DUCSU polls regularly.

The last DUCSU election was held in 1990.
