3 get life in prison for killing their spouses

Dhaka: Three people, including a woman, were sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday for killing their respective spouses in Sherpur, Faridpur and Lakshmipur districts.

In Sherpur, Asma Akhter, 19, 2nd wife of Sayedur Rahman alias Fazu Miah of Ramerkura village in Jhenaigati upazila, was awarded life imprisonment for killing Sayedur in 2014.

The court also fined her Tk 10,000.

According to the prosecution, Asma hacked her husband to death over a family feud while he was sleeping at his house on July 29, 2014.

Later, police arrested Asma from the house.

Harun Rashid, son of victim’s first wife, filed a case with Jhenaigati Police Station against Asma.

After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and

Session’s Judge Mohammad Mosleh Uddin handed down the verdict.

In Faridpur, a tribunal sentenced Kanchan Halda, 34, hailing from Bhatilaxmipur area of the district town, to life imprisonment for stabbing his wife Swapna Malo to death in 2009.

According to the prosecution, Kanchan along with his family members stabbed Swapna at their house on June 14, 2009, leaving her injured.

Later, she was taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead. Deceased’s father Jibon Malo filed a case with Kotwali Police Station.

Judge Md Rafiqul Islam of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict.

In Lakshmipur, Ismail Hossain strangled his wife Rehana Akter Banu at Mohadebpur of Sadar upazila over dowry and family feud on November 8, 2003.

Victim’s father Abu Taher filed a case with the Sadar Police Station.

Police submitted charge-sheet against Ismail on April 11, 2004.

After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Session’s Judge Md Saidur Rahman Gazi handed down the verdict.

The court also fined him Tk 10,000 and in case of failure to pay the fine, the convict will have to suffer one more year in prison.
