Nation worried over PM’s India tour: BNP
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the entire nation is now worried over Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s upcoming India tour as people are in the dark about the deals she is going to sign with the neighbouring country.
‘The speculations and discussions about the Prime Minister’s Indian visit have made the entire nation worried. It’s not yet made public about the deals to be signed during the tour. We’re worried at what the media is speculating about the proposed deals,’ he said.
Speaking at a preparatory meeting of the party, the BNP leader also feared that Bangladesh’s geographical independence will be at stake if the Prime Minister signs any defence deal with India.
‘It’s a big question whether we’re now independent. We’ve already lost our individual and political freedom while economic independence is also at stake. Our geographical freedom is also going to fall under threat,’ he observed, reports UNB.
Fakhrul warned that people will not accept any deal that goes against the country’s interests and its independence and sovereignty. ‘BNP also won’t compromise with anybody on the question of the country’s existence.’
The meeting was held at Nayapaltan Bhasani auditorium to make the party’s Independence Day rally a success.
Describing water problem with India as the main concern for Bangladesh, Fakhrul urged the Prime Minister to make strong efforts for resolving it and sign the Teesta water sharing deal during her tour.
About the recent militant incidents, he said the government is playing a mysterious game over the issue to make its political game and suppress its opponents.
Fakhrul said the government must take steps for forging a national unity to eliminate the militants with united efforts.
Accusing the Prime Minister of carrying out unilateral election campaign across the country using state machinery, he demanded the government ensure equal scope for all parties for conducting campaign for their respective parties.
