Factional clash: BCL central president hurt

A clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the pro-Awami League student organisation, during its Bandarban unit council session on Saturday left about 20 people, including the organisation’s central president HM Bodiujjaman Shohag, injured, confirmed police.
The clash erupted when followers of a faction, reportedly led by a president aspirant, attacked the council meeting attended by state minister for Chittagong hill tracts affairs Bir Bahadur, central BCL president HM Bodiujjaman Shohag, and existing president and general secretary of BCL district unit.
Bandarban Sadar police officer-in-charge Imtiaz Ahmed said security has been tightened in the town after the clash, which left around 20 people injured.
Three BCL activists were arrested from the town’s Rajar Math, where the council meeting was being held, for their link in the attack.
According to the witnesses, the followers of the two BCL factions engaged in the clash chasing each other.
There were also reports of vandalising vehicles and damaging tables and chairs during the clash.
BCL central president postponed the council session after the incident, with reports saying a new committee would be formed later.
