Dhaka: Lieutenant Colonel Abul Kalam Azad, the chief of the intelligence wing of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), who was seriously injured in Sylhet blasts, died undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) early on Friday.

RAB legal and media wing director Commander Mohammad Mufti Mahmud Khan told NTV Online, Azad, who was taken to Singapore for better treatment after his injuries in bomb blasts during the operation, codenamed ‘Twilight’, on 25 March, breathed his last at the CMH at about 12:05am.

His first namaz‐e‐janaza will be held at Cantonment Central Mosque after Jum’a prayers while the second at RAB Headquarters at about 3:00pm.

He will be buried at Banani military graveyard.

Earlier, on 29 March, the Lieutenant Colonel was brought back to Dhaka from Singapore and was admitted to CMH. He was flown to Singapore on 26 March for better treatment after critically injured during an operation at a suspected militant den in Sylhet.

Six people, including two policemen, were killed and 40 others, including Azad, Director (Intelligence) of the elite force, and another official of the wing Major Azad, injured in two bomb blasts near the militant den at Shibbari in South Surma upazila in Shylhet on 25 March night during an army‐led operation.
