Narayanganj: The bodies of five people, who went missing following a trawler capsize in River Meghna in Sonargaon upazila on Thursday, were recovered from the river on Sunday, raising the death from the accident to 16.

The deceased are Jamal Hawlader, 22, Babul, 45, Ismail, 23, Faruk Miah, 40, and Debdas, 30. All are residents of Rampura in Dhaka.

A joint team of BIWTA, Fire Service and Coast Guard recovered the bodies from different areas in the river by conducting the rescue operation from Sunday morning to evening, said Sonargaon Upazila Executive Officer Shahinul Islam.

One person still remained missing, he said, adding that the drive was on, he said.

Meanwhile, the victims’ family members were given Tk 20 each for their burial, added the UNO.

The engine‐run trawler carrying a group of 30‐40 people, who was going to traditional fair ‘Soleman Shah alias Langter Mela’ at Beltali of Matlab upazila in Chandpur from Rampura, sank in the river at Char Kishoreganj on Thursday afternoon after being hit by strong waves.

Four people died on the spot and 13 others had gone missing after the boat capsized.

On 2 April, 2015, 16 people were killed as a trawler sank in the River Buriganga near Aliganj Ferryghat of Fatullah here while a group of people was returning from the same ‘Langter Mela’.
