Dhaka: State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim on Tuesday said Facebook will not be blocked for any particular period of the day or night.

"We want to say clearly the Facebook won't be blocked for any hour of the day or night, there is no question of blocking Facebook at night, even it's not possible," she said while speaking at a press briefing at the secretariat.

The junior minister said if the Facebook is shut, people will feel disturbed as many are involved in e-commerce.

Tarana said it is not possible to block it even from 12:00am to 6:00am as it is used by all worldwide and there is a time difference with many countries of the world.

"The news an online media and print media on Monday over blocking the Facebook in Bangladesh hurt us," she said.

The Cabinet Division recently sent a letter to the Posts and Telecommunications Ministry seeking opinion whether Facebook could be blocked from 12:00am to 6:00am in the interest of children as the Facebook hampers their academic activities, Tarana said.

"We informed the Cabinet Division unofficially that it is not possible to block the Facebook. We've sent a letter to the Cabinet Division today after taking opinions of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and the Posts and Telecommunication Division saying that it will not be blocked," she said.

Tarana said the number of internet users is over 6 crore in Bangladesh and of them, Facebook users are over 2.30 crore.
