Khaleda Zia challenges 2 violence cases
Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia has filed a petition with the High Court seeking a stay on the proceedings of two violence cases filed against her in 2015.
The petition filed by Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon on Wednesday also sought cancellation of the trial court’s order taking cognisance of charge-sheets in the cases.
An HC bench of Justice M Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah is likely to hear the petition on April 9, said Barrister Khokon while talking to reporters.
He said as the trial court took cognisance of the charge-sheets against Khaleda Zia, fixed April 10 for hearing on charge-framing and asked Khaleda to appear before it on the day, they challenged the lower court order and sought a stay order on the case proceedings.
Police filed the cases with Darussalam Police Station in the city on February 10 and 20 in 2015 as two buses were torched in Darussalam area of the capital during the BNP-led alliance’s anti-government agitation and non-stop blockade in February in the same year.
Police pressed two charge-sheets before a court on May 12 and 14 in 2016.
On August 10 last, the trial court accepted the charge-sheets against Khaleda Zia in the two arson attack cases.
