Bangladesh, India sign 36 bilateral documents
New Delhi: Bangladesh and India on Saturday signed 36 bilateral documents, covering diverse areas of cooperation, including economic, defence cooperation, power and peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The bilateral documents include MoUs, agreements, and SOP, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque told a press conference in the evening.
Of the MoUs, one was signed on the close cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries, and six deals.
The documents were signed after the official bilateral talks between Bangladesh and India at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi witnessed the signing of the documents and those were exchanged in presence of the two prime ministers.
The two prime ministers along with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee flagged off new passenger bus services on Khulna-Kolkata route, train service on Khulna-Kolkata and reopening of Birol-Radhikapur rail route for freight service.
The four MoUs include one on bilateral judicial sector cooperation, another on extending 3rd Line of Credit by India to Bangladesh, third one on cooperation on peaceful use of outer space and the last one on passenger and cruise services on the coastal and protocol route.
The other MoUs were signed on extending defence LOC of US$ 500 million, on defence cooperation framework, on enhancing cooperation in the field of strategic and operational studies, on enhancing cooperation in the field of national security, development and strategic studies.
Later, speaking at a joint press briefing with the Indian Prime Minister after their bilateral talks, Hasina said she believes Bangladesh will get India's support to expeditiously resolve water resource management issues, including the sharing of the water of common rivers like Teesta, Padma-Ganges Barrage Project and basin-wide management of common rivers.
In the morning, Hasina said Prime Minister Narendra Modi she had a productive meeting and sat together to take their excellent bilateral relations to a newer height. "We also discussed all aspects of our ever growing relationship to enhance our understanding about mutual concerns and priorities,"
At the joint press briefing, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Mod announced a fresh $4.5 billion new Line of Credit to Bangladesh and said he believes it is only his and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's governments that can and will find an early solution to Teesta water sharing issues.
"I'm very happy that the Chief Minister of West Bengal is my honoured guest today. I know that her feelings for Bangladesh are as warm as my own. I assure you and the people of Bangladesh of our commitment and continuing efforts. I firmly believe that it's only my government and Excellency Sheikh Hasina, your government, that can and will find an early solution to Teesta Water Sharing," he said.
The Indian PM also announced $500 million credit line towards Bangladesh's military budget.
Modi said today Hasina and he held productive and comprehensive discussions on the full range of our partnership and agreed that the agenda of our cooperation has to remain focused on purposeful action. "We specifically looked at charting new avenues and tapping fresh opportunities in advancing our relationship."
Meanwhile, Hasina and Modi jointly uncovered the Hindi edition of the 1st autobiography of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - 'The Unfinished Memoirs'.
They unveiled the cover of the book after the bilateral talks at Hyderabad House before giving a joint statement.
The two prime ministers also unveiled the plaque of 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Road' at the heart of the Indian capital named after Bangladesh's Father of the Nation.
