Dhaka: The High Court on Wednesday asked Dr Zobaida Rahman, wife of BNP senior vice‐chairman Tarique Rahman, to appear before lower court within eight weeks in a graft case filed for amassing wealth through illegal means.

The High Court bench of Justice Obaidul Hasan and Justice Krishna Debnath came up with the order rejecting a rule.

The court also said the proceedings of the corruption case, filed by the Anti‐Corruption Commission (ACC) against her, will continue in lower court.

Lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan stood for ACC, while Barrister Kawser Kalam for Zobaida Rahman.

On 26 September, 2007, the ACC filed the case against Tarique Rahman, his wife Dr Zobaida Rahman and his mother‐in‐law Iqbal Mand Banu for amassing wealth through illegal means and concealing the information of wealth in their tax returns submitted to the National Board of Revenue.

The ACC brought charges of owning Tk 4.81 crore and concealing the information of wealth in the tax returns.

The case filed with Dhaka’s Kafrul Police.

Later, on April 04, 2008, the High Court issued an order staying the proceedings of the case responding to an appeal by Dr Zobaida Rahman. The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why the case against them would not be declared illegal.

On 10 January 2017, the HC set today for its judgement on its earlier order.
