Dhaka: A writ petition was filed on Monday with the High Court challenging the legality of Article 70 of the constitution that allows the cancellation of parliament membership for crossing the floor.

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Eunus Ali Akond filed the writ with bench concerned of court.

The Cabinet Secretary, Parliament Secretariat Secretary and Law Secretary have been made respondents to the petition.

According to the Article 70, a person elected as a Member of Parliament in which one was nominated as a candidate by apolitical party shall vacate his seat if s/he – a) resigns from that party ; or b) votes in Parliament against that party; but shall not thereby be disqualified for subsequent election as a member of Parliament.
