Arrest warrant for Comilla city mayor
Dhaka: A Dhaka court issued an arrest warrant against newly-elected Comilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku on charges of amassing illegal wealth.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Kamrul Hossain Molla issued the warrant on Tuesday morning.
The court also ordered to confiscate his all moveable and immovable properties.
The court said the order was issued as the court found the BNP leader guilty of acquiring around Tk 4.59crore illegally and concealing information of wealth Worthing Tk 1 crore 12lakh 40,000.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Mosharraf Hossain Kajal said the judge issued the order after considering the charges framed against Sakku in a case.
However, the court acquitted Sakku’s wife from the charges.
Mosharraf Hossain said the court asked the authorities to file a report on 9 May whether the mayor is arrested or not.
According to the case statement, ACC filed a case with Ramna police in this connection on 7 January, 2008. Later, on November 2016, police filed charge sheet against Monirul Haque to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Megistrate’s (CMM) Court.
Voting in Comilla City Corporation Election held on 30 March. BNP aspirant Monirul Haque Sakku re-elected as the city mayor defeating his nearest competitor Awami League’s Anjum Sultana Sima.
