Drive against ‘sitting bus services’ suspended for 15 days: BRTA

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has suspended its drive against ‘sitting or gate lock’ bus services in the city for 15 days.

However, the drive will continue against the buses that are charging additional fares and not keeping seats reserved for women and physically-challenged people in the capital, reports UNB.

BRTA Chairman Md Moshiar Rahman on Wednesday came up with the announcement while talking to reporters at BRTA head office after a meeting with the leaders of bus owners, civil society members and media people there.

‘The next decision over the special bus services will be taken at a meeting after 15 days,’ he said.

If anyone is interested to operate sitting bus services in the city streets, the bus authorities will have to apply to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), he added.

‘We’re thinking about bringing the sitting service buses under a discipline and the decision will be taken after further discussion about it,’ said Moshiar.

The BRTA chairman also said now a separate countrywide drive continues against bumper, angle and hook of buses, trucks and covered vans. The drive will continue to remove bumper, angle and hook from the front side of the motorised vehicles.

On Sunday last, the special bus services were stopped in the capital as per a decision taken at a joint meeting of BRTA and Dhaka Sarak Paribahan Samity, an association of bus owners.
