Internet price must come down: Tarana
Dhaka: State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim on Wednesday said the government is trying to decrease internet price at the consumer-level.
"We'll talk to the finance minister to reduce VAT and tax in various levels of the internet service in order to reduce the internet price," she said while talking to reporters after a meeting with internet operators at the secretariat over the preset of the internet price.
Mentioning that Bangladesh is now third bottom in worldwide in internet price, the junior minister expected to come to a decision within six months whether they can decrease internet price receiving opinions from the all sides concerned.
She said the Posts and Telecommunications Division, meanwhile, asked the internet operators to explain the price-fixing of the internet service within two days in a bid to remove confusion over the price.
The operators were also asked to inform the customers about the internet price at the consumer-level by publishing circulars in the daily newspapers, Tarana said.
According to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), there are over 6,72, 45,000 of internet customers in the country and of those, some 6, 31, 20,000 customers use internet in their mobile phones.
