Lightning strikes kill 12

Dhaka: Twelve people were killed and five others were injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Mymensingh, Chandpur, Chuadanga, Narayanganj, Brahmanbaria, Sunamganj and Sirajganj districts on Tuesday.

According to reports reaching news agency UNB, two siblings -- Asad Miah, 45 and Ingraj Mia, 40, sons of Abdul Malek --died on the spot when lightning struck them at Rauti village in Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh district while they were working at their paddy field in the area around 9:30am, said officer-in-charge of Dhobaura Police Station Shawkat Alam.

In another incident, Tamim, a class IX student of Mymensingh Jila School, suffered injuries after he was hit by a lightning strike while was playing football with his friends at the school playground at noon.

Tamim was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

In Chandpur, Selina Begum, 40, wife of Dulal Sardar and her son Yeasin Sarder, 15, of Dhalikandi village and three women of Pradhania Bari were injured in Goalnagar village as they were hit by separate lightning strikes around 2pm.

The injured -- Laki, 50, Rabeya, 40, and Fatema, 30, -- were taken to Chandpur General Hospital.

In Chuadanga, Samad Ali, 26, son of Haider Ali died on the spot as he was attacked by a lightning strike while harvesting paddy in a field at Kutubpur village in Damurhuda upazila at noon, said officer-in-charge of Damurhuda Police Station Abu Jihad.

Besides, a thunderbolt hit Abdul Malek, 7, a class II student of Kanaidnga Government Primary School and son of Rabiul Islam, while he was collecting mangoes at a mango cluster near his house at Kanaidnga village in the same upazila at noon, leaving him dead on the spot.

In Narayanganj, Subeda Begum, 40, of Mardasadi village and Jamir Uddin, 28, son of Afaz Uddin of Mononahardi village were killed in separate lightning incidents during the storm in Araihazar upazila at noon.

In Brahmanbaria, a woman, Khodeza Begum, wife of Kabir Miah, suffered injuries at Shreeghar village in Nabinagar upazila after a lightning strike hit her near Shreeghar Government Primary School during the storm at noon.

Khodeza died on the way to hospital, locals said.

In Sunamnganj, a teenage boy, Saiful Islam, 15, son of Umed Ali, died on the spot and two other people -- Dalim, 27, and Jamena, 42,-- as they were hit by separate lighting strikes at Bhoisarpar and Sonapur villages in Sadar upazila at noon.

In Siraganj, kohinur Begum, 50, wife of Abdul Halim of Masuakandi village in Raiganj upazila suffefred injuries after she was hit by a thunderbolt while calling goat from a field near the house during the rain around 5:30pm. She died on the way to local clinic.
