Dhaka: No accused could be arrested as of Thursday in connection with the case filed over the rape of two private university girls in a Banani hotel although police claimed that the offenders are under their watch.

However, police said they have already taken all-out measures so that no accused can flee the country.

The case filed with the Banani Police Station was transferred to Women Support and Investigation Division (WSID) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Tuesday night.

WISD Deputy Commissioner Farida Yesmin said Inspector Ismat Ara Anny has been made new investigation officer (IO) of the case. Earlier, Inspector (Investigation) of Banani Police Station Abdul Matin was investigating the incident that took place on March 28.
"We've already started investigation into the incident. Besides, other agencies, including Detective Branch (DB), are working on it," the WSID DC said.

Detectives and a special team formed by the deputy commissioner (Gulshan) of DMP carried out drives at different places, including Gulshan, Badda and Kalshi of Mirpur-12, on Tuesday night and Wednesday to arrest the accused, police said.

Requesting anonymity, a senior DMP officer said they suspected that the accused are now staying outside the capital.

Contacted, Deputy Commissioner (DB-North) of DMP Sheikh Nazmul Alam said the detectives have also been trying to arrest the culprits.

Replying to a question, he said they have taken all-out measures so that no one can flee the country.

Since the rape incident came to the fore, different law enforcement agencies, including intelligence agencies, started shadow investigation into it alongside the police.

Earlier on May 6, one of the rape victims filed a case with Banani Police Station in city accusing five people.

Of the accused, Shafaat Ahmed, 26, and Nayem Ashraf, 30, were sued for raping the two female students of a private university while Sadman Sakif, 24, Shafat's driver Billal, 26, and his unnamed bodyguard for abetting the crime.

According to the case statement, the plaintiff along with her friend went to a residential hotel at Banani to attend the birthday party of Shafat around 9pm on March 28.

The two prime accused -- Shafat and Nayem -- confined them to two rooms of the hotel at gunpoint after the rooftop birthday party was over at midnight. The two girls were made to drink liquor before being raped. Shafat raped the plaintiff while Nayem her friend.

Shafat's driver Billal filmed the incident, she said in the FIR adding that they got introduced with Shafat and Nayem through Sadman Sakif.
