CIID launches probe against Apan Jewellers owner Dildar
Dhaka: Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has formed a two-member committee to investigate the sources of wealth of Dildar Ahmed, one of the owners of Apan Jewellers and father of the Banani rape-case prime accused Safat Ahmed.
"We constituted a two-member probe panel consisting of our Deputy Director HM Shariful and Assistant Revenue Officer Zakir Hossain on Thursday to look into the sources of wealth of Dildar Ahmed," CIID Director General Dr Moinul Khan told news agency UNB on Friday.
The committee was asked to submit its report as early as possible, he said hoping that they will get the primary investigation report very soon.
Dildar is in the limelight after the rape of two private university girls by his son Shafat and his cohorts in a Banani hotel came to the fore.
One of the rape victims filed a case with Banani Police Station on May 6 accusing five people, including Safat. The four other accused are Nayeem Ashraf, Sadman Sakif, Shafat's driver Billal, 26, and his bodyguard Abul Kalam Azad.
Of them, prime accused Safat and Sadman were remanded on Friday over the rape incident after they were arrested from Sylhet on Thursday night.
The CIID DG said Dildar Ahmed, who along with his partners owns six showrooms of Apan Jewellerrs in Uttara, Banani, Gulshan and Mouchak areas of the capital, has already been listed as a 'non-transparent' businessman.
He also said the CIID sent a letter to the Bangladesh Bank on Thursday seeking information about the bank accounts of Dildar.
Replying to a query, Moinul said there is no record of gold import in the last 10 years in the country. "We're looking into the source of gold collection of Apan Jewellers as it's one of the country's biggest jewellery brands," he said.
Mentioning that Apan Jewellers also sells diamond, he posed a question, "How does it collect diamond as there's no information about diamond import legally?"
The CIID chief said they were looking into whether the jewellery brand brings diamond from abroad on declaration after paying tax.
Asked what prompted the CIID to launch investigation against Dildar, he said different print and electronic as well as social media reported that Dildar made a budget to spend Tk 100 crore to hush up the Banani rape incident involving his son. "That's why we want to look into how he amassed huge money."
