Lightning kills 8

Dhaka: Eight people, including a woman and her son, were killed and two others injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Naogaon and Khagrachhari districts on Saturday.

In Naogaon, five people were killed as thunderbolts struck them in Sadar, Atrai and Mahadebpur upazilas at noon.

Farmer Afzal Hossain of Fatipur village in Sadar upazila died on the spot as lighting struck him while harvesting paddy during rain around 2:30pm, said officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Tariqul Islam.

A thunderbolt hit Rafiqul Islam, son of Amzad Hossain of Sarijpur village in the same upazila, as he went to a field to call their cattle home during the rain, leaving him dead on the spot.

Besides, Class-II student Arafat Rahman, son of Asadaul Islam, died on the spot as he was hit by lightning at the school balcony in Mahadebpur upazila at noon, said OC of Mahadebpur Police Station Mizanur Rahman.

Atrai Police Station OC Badruddoza said two people were killed by separate lightning strikes in Atrai upazila.

In Khagrachhari, three people, including a woman and her son, were killed by separate lightning strikes in Sadar upazila at noon.

Niasrang Marma, 45, and her son Thoaipuru Marma, 20, died on the spot when a thunderbolt struck them at their house at Karbaripara at noon, said Bhaibonchhora union parishad chairman Parimal Tripura.

Besides, farmer Sanu Marma, 25, was killed on the spot after being hit a thunderbolt at Kaladoba while harvesting paddy at noon.
