Bangladesh ranked world’s 32nd fragile state

Dhaka: Bangladesh is ranked 32nd in the list of fragile states, according to the newly released Fragile States Index (FSI) by the Fund for Peace.

The annual FSI was published on Fund for Peace’s website highlighting global political, economic and social pressures experienced by the states.

According to the report, among the 178 countries in the list, seven out of ten top fragile states are from Africa: South Sudan (1st), Somalia (2nd), Central African Republic (3rd), Sudan (4th), Democratic Republic of the Congo (5th), Chad (6th), and Gini (10th).

Among the Asian countries, Afghanistan ranked 8th, Yemen 7th, and Syria in 9th position in FSI 2015.

Asian countries in FSI

Among the Asian countries, Iraq is in 12th position, followed by Pakistan (13th), Myanmar (27th), North Korea (29th), Sri Lanka (34th), Nepal (35th), Lebanon (40th), Iran (44th), and Philippines (48th).

South Asian big shot India stands at 69th position in this year’s FSI. Another South Asian giant China is ranked in 83th, followed by Indonesia (88th), and Saudi Arabia (101st).       

South America

The most powerful South American state the United States of America is ranked 158th in the index. Caribbean nation Haiti secured the 11th position, followed by El Salvador (102nd), Dominican Republic (104th), and Canada (168th). 

South America

Countries in South America are in better positions in the index. None of the countries from this continent are listed in the first 50 positions. Guatemala is ranked 64th in the index, followed by Nikaragua (72th), Bolivia (76th), Ecuador (85th), Peru (98th), Cuba (112th), Brazil (123th), and Chili (150th).    

Europe

European countries have maintained the better positions in FSI 2015 as well. European big gun Russia is ranked 65th, followed by Georgia (70), Ukraine (84), Serbia (92), Cyprus (114), Greece (134), Hungary (139), Italy (147), Spain (151), France (160), United Kingdom (161), and Germany (165). 

Africa

First ten fragile states in the index are from Africa. Other countries listed in the index from the continent are Nigeria (14), Cote d’Ivoire (15), Zimbabwe (16), and Ethiopia (20).

Oceania

Countries from Oceania are ranked in lower part of the index, meaning they are in better conditions. Solomon Islands is ranked 50th, followed by Papua New Guinea (57), and Fiji (82). Two giants of the continent—Australia and New Zealand are in 170th and 172nd position in the list.

Top 10 tough states

Finland retains its best position, with its Nordic neighbours Sweden and Norway rounding out the best three rankings. Denmark is ranked 175th position in the index, followed by Luxemburg (174), Switzerland (173), Iceland (171), and Ireland (169).

The Fragile States Index (formerly the Failed States Index) is an annual report published by the United States think-tank the Fund for Peace and the magazine Foreign Policy since 2005.
