Lakshmipur: A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Dattapara in Sadar upazila of Lakshmipur early on Friday.

Mokhtar Hossain, officer‐in‐charge (OC) of Chandraganj Police station, said police arrested Russel alias Kala Russel, a suspected robber along with a gun, two bullets and 11 Yaba pills from an abandoned house at North Joypur in Sadar upazila on Thursday.

Acting on the statement of Russel, son of Abdul Karim of Chatkhil upazila in Noakhali district, police along with Russel conducted a drive at Dattapara for recovering arms around 2:00am.

Sensing the law enforcers’ presence, Russel’s associates opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gunfight.

At one stage, Russel was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, while the others managed to flee the scene.

Three policemen were injured during the operation.

Police also recovered one gun, one pistol and nine bullets from the spot.

Russel was wanted in 20 cases, including that of robbery, murder and other criminal cases, filed with Chandraganj Police Station, the OC said.
