Gazipur: The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday filed a case against Prof MA Mannan, the mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) and a BNP vice-chairman, for misappropriating Tk 7.18 crore.

ACC deputy director Md Shamsur Alam filed the case with Joydebpur police station at noon, Commission's spokesman Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told UNB.

According to the first information report (FIR),the city corporation got a budgetary allocation of Tk 9 crore during fiscal 2013-14. The allocation was supposed to be spent for implementing specific development projects taken under the City Corporation's budget.

During the ACC's probe, it has been found that Mannan did not allocate the amount for any budgetary projects, but he spent about Tk 7.18 crore to other sector as grant allocation, misusing his power and violating the government's rules.

The GCC mayor was responsible to inform the ministries concerned about the progress in spending the allocation. But, he did not do so for his personal gains, the FIR said.

The case was filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1947.
