Banani Rape: Police probe gets 3-day extension
Dhaka: The deadline for submission of the probe report in a case filed over the rape of two private university girls in a Banani hotel has been extended by three days to May 24.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) granted the extension as the three-member probe committee is yet to get statements from two witnesses - police officers stationed at Banani police station - according to DMP Additional Commissioner Mizanur Rahman, who is heading the probe.
Replying to a question, he said they are investigating whether there was any negligence of duty in filing of the case, or arresting the culprits, or even the conduct of the concerned police officers with the victims.
Departmental action will be taken if any negligence of duty is found against any of the police officers, said Mizanur.
Two other members of the committee are Joint Commissioner (DB) Abdul Baten and Joint Commissioner (Crime) Krishna Pad Ray.
Besides, a 4-member committee, led by Joint Commissioner (Crime) Krishna Pad Ray, will assist in the investigation of the sensational rape case.
The two university girls were raped at the Raintree Hotel in Banani on March 28.
One of the rape victims filed a case with Banani Police Station on May 6 accusing five people - but there are allegations that this followed an initial period during which the same station refused to accept the case, instead questioning the victim's motives and actions.
