5 serving jail without trial produced before HC

Dhaka: Five accused, who had been languishing in Mymensingh Central Jail without trial, were produced before the High Court on Monday.

The accused—Mojibur Rahman of Laturpara in Gouripur had been in jail since 13 October  in 2007, Abu Hasem of Narail since 2  Junein 2007, Sekandar Ali of Phulbaria since October 15 in 2008, Abul Hashem of Faridpur since 31 October  in 2007 and Sarowar Hossain of Patuakhali since 7 October  in 2007.

The five accused were produced before the High Court bench of Justice AK Abdul Hakim and Justice SM Mujibur Rahman this morning after Supreme Court legal aid lawyer Chanchal Kumar had brought the matter forward.

Earlier on 15 May, two HC benches issued suo moto orders asking the authorities concerned to produce before it 10 accused languishing in different jails for 9-10 years without trial.

Among them, five, staying in Mymensingh Central Jail, were asked to produce before the court on May 29 while the rest on 1 June.

Of the latter five, three accused are in Rajshahi Central Jail and one each is in Munshiganj and Manikganj district jails.

Of them, nine are accused in murder cases while the other was sued under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
