ICT withdraws arrest warrant against Zafarullah
Dhaka: International Crimes Tribunal 2 (ICT) withdrew the arrest warrant issued against Gonoshastho Trust founder Dr Zafarullah Chowdhury.
Tribunal took away the warrant on Sunday afternoon after appellate division sent a copy of the order.
Zafarullah’s lawyer barrister Rasna Imam said her client submitted a copy of appellate division order staying the monetary penalty imposed upon him.
Earlier, on 18 June, ICT issued an arrest warrant against Zafarullah. A three-member tribunal bench led by Obaidul Hassan issued the arrest warrant as Zafarullah failed to submit a fine of Tk 5,000 in persuasion of the contempt of court.
On 10 June, ICT Zafarullah Chowdhury to stand on the courtroom dock for an hour and imposed Tk 5,000 fine for commenting on British journalist Devid Burgman’s punishment.
The tribunal, led by Justice Obaidul Hossain, handed over a month of imprisonment for him if he doesn’t pay the monetary penalty.
On 16 June, the Supreme Court’s appellate division stayed the fine till 5 July.
