Apan Jewellers’ 520kg gold to be deposited to central bank today
Dhaka: The gold, which was seized from five Apan Jewellers‘ showrooms, will be deposited to Bangladesh Bank on Sunday, said Customs Intelligence Directorate Director General Moinul Khan on Saturday night.
Moinul Khan said Customs Intelligence Investigation Directorate (CIID) seized around 520kilograms (kg) of gold from five outlets of Apan Jewellers. The golds will be handed over to Bangladesh Bank thought Dhaka Customs House at about 9:00am.
The DG said, ‘The seized gold is illegal. The jewellers shop failed to show any legal documents of the gold jewelleries in last 20 days. So, the customs directorate decided to hand over the gold to Bangladesh Bank.’
Earlier, on 14 and 15 May, the customs intelligence officials conducted raid at five outlets—Gulshan DCC Market, Gulshan Avenue, Uttara, Shimanto Square, and Mouchak— of Apan Jewellers and seized around 520kgs gold and 427grams diamond. Later, those were handed over to the jewellers for showing legal documents.
The custom officials conducted three hearing sessions for the jewellers to defence themselves. Apon Jewellers failed to show any authorized documents for keeping those jewelleries.
However, the CIID handed over 2.3kg gold to its real 85 owners from a list of the 182 customers of Apan Jewellers.
