Court asks PIB to look into Sylhet custodial death case

Sylhet: A court here on Sunday asked the Police Bureau of Investigation (PIB) to investigate the case filed over the death of an accused in police custody.

Judge of Sylhet Cognisance Court-1 M Atikul Haider passed the order, also asking the PIB to submit the probe report before the court within July 10 next.

On May 19 last, Nazrul Islam Babu, an accused of a case filed under the Women and Children Repression and Prevention Act, died in police custody.
Police claimed that Nazrul committed suicide.

Later, Nazrul's mother Rokeya Begum filed a case with Jaintapur police station against 11 people.

Officer-in-charge of the police station Safiul Kabir, sub-inspector Shafikur Rahman, two assistant sub-inspectors Humayan and Joynal and constable Abdul Hannan of the same police station were also made accused in the case.

Four police personnel of Jaintapur police station -- Sub Inspector Shafiqur Rahman, assistant sub-inspector Joynal Abedin, and two constables Akkas Ali and Nantu Chakma-- were suspended on Thursday for negligence of duty.
