HC rule for compensation of Malibagh flyover collapse victims
Dhaka: The High Court (HC) on Wednesday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why it will not direct to pay Tk 50 lakh to the family of the worker who was killed after the concrete girder of the under‐construction Malibagh‐Mouchak flyover collapsed on him, and Tk 30 lakh each to the families of the two who were injured during the incident as compensation.
A two‐member HC bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque passed the order after hearing of a writ petition filed by Children’s Charity Foundation of Bangladesh, a human rights organisation.
Secretary and chief engineer of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), chief engineers of Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation, officer‐in‐charge of Ramna Police Station and managing director of Toma Construction have been asked to reply the rule within four weeks.
On March 13, worker Shwapan, 40, hailing from Kishoreganj’s Pakundia upazila, was killed and Toma Group engineer
Polash and Nurunnabi, believed to be a pedestrian, were injured as a concrete girder of the under‐construction Malibagh‐Mouchak flyover collapsed on Malibagh level‐crossing in the capital.
Following the incident, Children’s Charity Foundation of Bangladesh filed the writ petition on June 3.
Barrister Abdul Halim stood for the petitioner during the hearing of the writ petition.
