Dhaka: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the stay order of its previous order following a High Court order that granted bail to ruling Awami League lawmaker from Tangail‐3 constituency Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in Faruk Ahmed murder case.

A three‐member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed ‘no order’ following a writ petition.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said with the today’s order the SC upheld its previous order staying bail to Rana granted by the High Court.

Earlier, on 8 May, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court extended its stay for four months on a High Court order granting bail to Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in the case.

On 13 April, an HC bench granted bail to MP Rana in the case.

However, a Chamber Justice of the SC, on 18 April, stayed the High Court order till May 8.

Faruk Ahmed, a senior AL leader and a freedom fighter, was shot dead in the district town of Tangail on 18 January, 2013.

Rana is a charge‐sheeted accused in the case.

When Rana appeared before Tangail Additional District and Session’s Judge Court ending his 22‐month fugitive run on 18 September last, the court sent him to jail.

In February 2016, detectives pressed charges against 14 people, including the ruling party MP and his three brothers, in the Faruk murder case.
