Dhaka: The government will construct some 10,000 residential flats for slum dwellers in Dhaka for their rehabilitation.

‘The National Housing Authority will build the rental‐based flats at Mirpur Housing Estate in Mirpur Section‐11 in the capital in phases,’ Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told reporters after a power‐point presentation on the project at the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina witnessed the power‐point presentation and gave necessary directives to the officials concerned in this regard.

Public Works Secretary Shahidullah Khandaker made the power‐point presentation and briefed the Prime Minister about different aspects of the project.

The press secretary said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman first took a project at Bhashantek in Dhaka’s Mirpur area for the rehabilitation of the homeless and riverbank erosion victims.

Besides, the present government has framed the National Housing Policy 2016 and taken initiatives for building flats for the lower and middleclass people.

The flats for slum dwellers will be built in the light of the concept initiated by Bangabandhu and the National Housing Policy 2016, he said.

The press secretary said the Prime Minister witnessed another power‐point presentation on the construction of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Square at Talaimari Mor in Rajshahi.

Architect Rafiq Azam made the power‐point presentation.

Ihsanul Karim said the Bangabandhu Square will be built on 61 kathas of land featuring permanent and temporary galleries, interactive digital library and research, multipurpose hall and amphitheater.

‘Life and works of the Father of the Nation will be projected through the square,’ he said.

Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and Senior PMO Secretary Suraiya Begum were, among others, present on the occasion.
