BSTI realises Tk 5.70 lakh in fine

Dhaka: Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) in its three anti-adulteration drives on Thursday realised Tk 5.70 lakh in fine in the city on charges of violating BSTI rules and the Consumers' Rights Protection Act by different food and other outlets.

A special BSTI team, led by Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam in association with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), conducted a drive in the city's Mohakhali area while executive magistrates Tasmia Jaygirdar and Upoma Farisa conducted two more drives in Bailey Road and Begun Bari area respectively, said a BSTI press release.

A BSTI team, led by Sarwar Alam, fined Macs Trade International, Tejgaon Tk 3 lakh on charge of distributing illegal drinking water and sentenced three workers of Abul Bashar Drinking Water to different terms of jail.

In the same drive, Sarwar fined Cream Sweets of Mohakhali area Tk 1.5 lakh for selling curd and unhealthy Iftar items using fake BSTI seal.

Yet in another drive, Tasmia fined Amazon Discount Tk 60,000 and Mother Care Tk 50,000 for selling shampoo, talcum powder, skin cream and other products without the BSTI approval.

During another drive at Begun Bari, Upoma Farisa fined Hoque Food and Bakery Tk 10,000 for deceiving consumers using fake BSTI seal.

BSTI said it will further strengthen its drives against adulteration in the city.
