Lawmaker’s son on 4-day custody

Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Wednesday again placed Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan, on a four-day remand in a case filed for reportedly shooting two people to death with his firearm in Dhaka’s New Eskaton area.
Dhaka Metropolitan magistrate M Mahbubur Rahman passed the order after Rony was produced before the court.
The court also rejected the bail petition filed by Rony’s lawyer Kazi Najibullah Hiru.
Earlier, the court fixed today for hearing the petition for a seven-day custody, submitted by investigation officer of the case sub-inspector of Detective Branch (DB) Dipak Kumar Das on 21 June.
On 13 April, Rony allegedly opened fire on people indiscriminately near Janakantha Bhaban in New Eskaton area from his car, leaving two people—rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and Janakantha’s auto-rickshaw driver Yakub—injured with bullets.
Hakim succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on 15 April while Yeakub died at the hospital on 23 April.
On 15 April, a case was filed with Ramna Police Station against unidentified people in this connection.
On 1 June, law enforces arrested Rony from his Dhanmondi residence in connection with the firing.
Rony had been put on a four-day remand following a court order on 9 May.
