Dhaka: Members of Bangladesh Army and Fire Service on Wednesday intensified their rescue operations following the massive landslides that struck the country's five southeastern hill districts on Tuesday claiming 149 lives.

According to sources at local administration, the bodies of 16 more people were recovered from under rubble in Chittagong, Rangamati, Cox's Bazar and Khagrachhari districts on Wednesday.

Of them, seven bodies were retrieved from under mud in Rangamati, while five in Chittagong and two each in Rangamati, Cox's Bazar and Khagrachhari.

With this, a total of 105 people, including four Army men, were killed in Rangamati while 34 in Chittagong, six in Bandarban and two each in Cox's Bazar and Khagrachhari districts.

There were 33 children, 30 women and 42 men among those were killed in landslides in Rangamati.

Eight-two people were also injured in the landslides. Of them, 39 were admitted to Sadar Hospital while the rest took primary aid.

Meanwhile, some 1,100 members of Army along with the Fire Service personnel were carrying out the rescue operations in Rangamati, which was hit worst by the landslide, according to sources at the control room opened by the deputy commissioner's office.

An official at Rangamati region headquarters of Bangladesh Army said all members of Army camps joined the rescue operation.

Meanwhile, Rangamati Fire Service assistant director Didarul Alam said they were carrying out the rescue operations in several groups.

In Chittagong, 34 people, including three minors, were killed in hillslides, triggered by torrential rains, in remote Dopachhari union in Chandanaish, Rangunia and Raujan upazilas.

Of them, the bodies of 29 were recovered on Tuesday and that of five others on Wednesday.

According to a press release issued by the district administration, 27 people were killed in Rangunia upazila, four in Chandanaish upazila and one each in Raujan and Banshkhali upazilas and in the city.

Besides, nine people were injured and four others remained missing till filing of this report around 6pm.
 In Bandarban, six people, including three minor siblings, were killed in the hillslides.

In Cox's Bazar, the bodies of M Selim Miah Mistri, 35, and his daughter Tisha Mani, 3, residents of Paschim Satgharia Para village in Teknaf upazila, were recovered in the early hours.

In Khagrachhari, two people, including a woman, were killed in landslides at Bormachhari and Haluddyapara on Tuesday afternoon and their bodies were recovered on Wednesday, said officer-in-charge of Lakkhichhari Police Station Arif Iqbal.

Seven people were also injured in the mudslide in remote areas, he said.

Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader visited the affected areas in Rangamati and Bandarban on Wednesday and distributed relief materials among the victims.

He also assured that the government will provide all the necessary relief to the affected people.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya also visited the affected areas in Rangamati and Chittagong.
