Lopsided election not possible this time: Khaleda Zia

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday said Awami League will not be able to hold a lopsided election like the January-5 one further as even India has change its stance on the current government realising its mistake.

"An election is now very important as people have got fed-up with the country's current situation. The election that was held in 2014 can't be called an election, and no country except our neighbouring country (India) accepted it," she said.

The BNP chief further said, "But, this time they (India) have changed their tune as they realised that it was their mistake (to support the 2014 polls). That's way no election will be held this time in the country if BNP and the 20-party don't join it."

Khaleda Zia came up with the comments while speaking at an iftar party arranged by Dhaka south city unit BNP at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.

Khaleda Zia said her party and the 20-praty alliance will join the 11th parliamentary election if it is held under a neutral government. "We'll surely win the polls if it is held in a credible manner."

She said a neutral and acceptable election is possible if it is held under a non-party election-time supportive government.

Accusing the ruling party men of indulging in widespread repressive acts killing and maiming many people, the BNP chief said people will teach them a good lesson through a fair election.

Khaleda Zia slammed her arch rival Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for going to Sweden at a time when hillslides played havoc with people's lives in four districts. "She's been on a pleasure trip though 155 people, including army personnel, were killed in landslide as she has no affection for people."

Referring to Prime Minister's comment that she is ready even to sacrifice her life for people, the BNP chief wanted to know is her remark true when she has been on a tour when people are dying at home?
