Road crashes kill 14

Dhaka: At least 14 people were killed and 49 others injured in road crashes in Habiganj, Sirajganj, Khagrachhari, Dhaka, Gopalganj, Panchagarh and Rajshahi districts on Wednesday.

In Habiganj, three people, including a woman and her son, were killed and eight others injured when a microbus hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Sadarghat Bazar in Nabiganj upazila.
 The deceased were identified as Sujia Begum, 40, wife of Abdul Ali, their son Omar Ali, 10, of Islampur village, and Tazmul Ali, 30, the auto driver and son of Towhid Miah.

The microbus crashed into the auto-rickshaw around 4 pm, leaving Omar killed on the spot and 10 people injured, said Bhimol Chandra Bhoumik, officer-in-charge of Sherpur Highway Police Station.

Two of the injured died at hospital, he said.

In Sirajganj, three people were killed when a bus hit a motorbike on Bogra-Nagarbari highway in Talgachhi Bazar area of Shahjadpur upazila.
 The Dhaka-bound bus of 'Pabna Express' hit the motorbike carrying three people around 11:30 am, leaving two riders dead on the spot and the other injured, said OC of Hatikumrul Highway Police Abdur Quader Jilani.

The injured were taken to Potajia Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared the injured dead.

Vehicular movement on the busy road remained suspended for one hour following the accident.

In Khagrachhari, a Chittagong-bound bus overturned after hitting a roadside tree in Kalapani area of Guimara upazila, killing three people and injuring 15 others.

Witnesses said the bus turned turtle around 8:30am after hitting the tree as its driver lost control over the steering.

In Dhaka, two people were killed and two others injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Bathuli area in Dhamrai upazila.

Rezaul Haque Dipu, officer-in-charge of Dhamrai Police Station, said an ambulance, carrying a patient and his relatives, crashed into a roadside tree around 11:30am as the driver lost control over the steering, leaving two dead on the spot and two injured.

In Gopalganj, a day-labourer was killed and 20 others were injured as a pickup fell into a roadside ditch on Gopalganj-Tekerhat road in Bhennabari Bazar area of Sadar upazila.

In Panchagarh, Makinuddin, 60, of Bamanpara village was killed when a motorbike hit his bicycle on Panchagarh-Banglabandha highway in Tentulia upazila.

In Rajshahi, a garment worker was killed and four others were injured when a bus hit an auto-rickshaw at Bhadra in the city around 2 pm.
