Stay on mobile court operation order gets 2-week extension

Dhaka: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday extended by two weeks its earlier order staying a High Court verdict declaring illegal and unconstitutional the operation of mobile courts by executive magistrates.
A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the order following three separate leave-to-appeal petitions challenging the verdict.
Earlier, on 11 May, the High Court declared illegal and unconstitutional the operation of mobile courts conducted by executive magistrates.
In the petitions filed on May 14, the government filed the three provisional leave-to-appeal petitions with the SC seeking a stay on the HC verdict.
The government sought extension of its earlier stay order for four weeks.
Later, on May 21, the SC adjourned the verdict of the High Court till 2 July.
