HC clears way for Tavella murder trial

Dhaka: The High Court on Tuesday cleared the way for continuing the trial proceedings of a case filed in connection with the murder of Italian aid worker Tavella Cesare.
An HC bench of Justice Md Shawkat Hossain and Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder passed the order after rejecting the petition filed by BNP leader MA Qaiyum's brother, seeking cancellation of the charge framed against Qaiyum and six others in the case.
Khandaker Mahmud Hossain stood for the petitioner while assistant attorney general Mamunur Rashid stood for the state.
From now there is no bar to continue the trial proceedings of the murder case, said Mamunur Rashid.
Earlier, on October 25, 2016, a court framed charges against Dhaka city BNP's joint convener MA Qaiyum and six others in a case filed in connection with the murder of Tavella Cesare.
Six other accused are: Qaiyum's brother Abdul Matin, Russel Chowdhury alias Chatki Russel, Minhazul Arefin Russel alias Bhagne Russel, Tamzid Ahmed Rubel alias Mobile Rubel alias Shooter Rubel, Shakhawat Hossain alias Sharif and Md Sohel. All the accused are in jail now.
Earlier, police submitted the charge sheet against them to a Dhaka court on June 28.
On 28 September, 2015, Italian national Cesare Tavella, 50, an official of the Netherlands-based non-governmental organisation 'ICCO Cooperation', was shot to death by some miscreants at road no. 90 of the diplomatic zone, Gulshan.
