Women in parliament are showpieces: Ershad
Dhaka: Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Monday termed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury and Opposition Leader Raushan Ershad as showpieces during his speech in the Parliament.
Ershad in a general discussion on the proposed budget said we frequently mention the names of our prime minister, speaker, opposition leader and other woman leaders while talking about women’s empowerment, but all of them are showpieces.
The other women in the country are more helpless, said the Jatiya Party chief.
Ershad’s statement drew anger of many lawmakers and they protested his comment.
He said the women fear to visit Shaheed Minar for paying respect after midnight.
Ershad, mentioning the harassment women faced during the Bangla New Year celebration, said the incident is yet to get justice.
He said he took initiatives against acid violence during his time.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said Ershad’s speech will be expunged from the records of parliamentary proceedings.
The opposition leader Raushan Ershad also sought apology from all on behalf of her party.
The speaker said Ershad’s comments on women environment will be removed as the use of language violated the conduct of the parliament.
