Dhaka: A suspected mugger was killed and another was injured in a reported gunfight with police in the capital’s Purana Paltan area on Monday night.

The deceased is Shamim, in his thirties, while the injured is Abdul Karim, who is 34 years old.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) authorities said a group of snatchers took away Tk 1lakh from a trader at Topkhana road at about 9:30pm.

Local people chased the muggers while fleeing. At one stage, police also chased them.

However, the hoodlums opened fire on the law enforcers at UBL crossing, forcing them to fire back.

Shamim and Karim sustained bullet injuries to their thigh in the leg legs while their other accomplices managed to flee.

Police took them to the DMCH where Shamim died at about 11:15pm.

Police also recovered the looted money.
