Dhaka: Eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain on Friday said the High Court will decide whether Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya will continue as minister.

‘No one is above the law...the Maya issue is under trial, it's now the High Court's jurisdiction whether he'll remain as minister or not,’ he said.

The constitution expert said this while talking to reporters after attending the closing ceremony of a certification and training programme, organised by South Asian Institute for Advanced Legal and Human Rights Study (SAILS) at Brac Centre Inn in the city's Mohakhali area.

It is better to wait for the HC's judgment, Dr Kamal said adding that the court will tell what would be right for Maya.

On 14 June, the Appellate Division upheld a lower court verdict in 2008 that sentenced Maya to 13 years' imprisonment in a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).

After the release of the full verdict on 22 June, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said Maya's continuation as a minister and an MP goes against the article 66(2) of the constitution as he has been convicted in an offence involving moral turpitude.
