Dhaka: The Supreme Court on Sunday again fixed 8 July for passing order on the government’s petition against a High Court order granting bail to BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three violence cases.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, fixed the date.

Earlier on 2 July, the bench had fixed 5 July for giving the order.

The court also directed that a three-member medical team, comprising a medicine specialist, cardiologist and cardiovascular specialist, be formed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital to conduct Mirza Fakhrul’s treatment and a report on his physical condition be submitted by the team on 8 July.

The court gave the directive after Fakhrul’s lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain submitted several reports on his (Fakhrul’s) health condition, said another lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon.

But Attorney General Mahbubey Alam opposed the reports.

On 28 June, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court turned down the government’s petition against a High Court order granting bail to Fakhrul.

On 25 June, after concluding hearing on the government appeal, the bench of the Appellate Division fixed the date for giving the order.

Earlier on 18 June, the High Court granted bail to the BNP leader in the three cases of violence.

Two of the cases were filed with Paltan Police Station while another with Motijheel Police Station.

On April 16, Mirza Fakhrul secured six months’ bail from HC in another case filed with Paltan Police Station on 4 January  for allegedly carrying out arson attack and vandalism.

On the same day, the court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why Fakhrul should not be given bail in three other cases.

He was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital on 13 June following a HC order.

On 6 January, plainclothes police picked up Fakhrul as he came out of the Jatiya Press Club after nearly 25 hours of stay there following BNP’s announcement to observe January-5 as ‘Democracy Killing Day’, protesting the 10th parliamentary polls held on the day.

The BNP leader is now facing 79 cases.
