Narayanganj: After 14 long years, a Narayanganj court on Sunday framed charges against six people in a case filed in connection with the bomb attack on Awami League office at Chashara that killed 20 people and injured over 50 on 16 June 2001.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Miazi Shahidul Alam Chowdhury framed the charges.
The court fixed 2 August for the next hearing.
Those indicted are Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami (Huji) leader Mufti Abdul Hannan, militant leader Obaidullah Rahman, Narayanganj City Corporation Councillor Shawkat Hashem Shaku, Shahadatullah Jewel, and twin brothers Anisul Morsalin and Muhibul Mottakin.
Mufti Hannan and Shahadatullah Jewel were present in the dock.
Earlier, in 2013, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police submitted chargesheet against six people in two cases–one for killing and another under the Explosive Substances Act–filed in connection with the incident.
Police also cleared 31 people, including district BNP President Advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker, of the charges.
Of the six accused, Obaidullah and Shaku secured bail while Mufti Hannan and Jewel are behind the bar, and Morsalin and Mottakin are now in Indian jail.
A case was filed against 39 people, including then district BNP general secretary Taimur and its 26 activists, after the bomb attack.
