Chittagong: An alleged robber was killed and seven policemen were injured during a reported gunfight at Kottabazar area on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Sitakunda upazila on Monday night.

The deceased is Nazim Uddin, in his thirties, a resident of the area.

The Sitakunda police said a gang of robber was taking preparation to commit robbery in the area; a team of police conducted a drive there at about 9:00 pm.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on them, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

At one stage, Nazim was caught in the line of fire and injured critically.

Later he died in a local hospital undergoing treatment.

The law enforcers arrested Didar, a member of the robber gang, while other members managed to flee the scene.

Seven policemen—sub-inspectors Mizan and Rofiqul Islam Jaman and constables Firoz Mia, Jahid Hasan, Shahadat Ali, Kamrul and Mozammel—were also injured during the gunfight.

Police recovered the body of Nizam and sent it to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

The law enforcers also recovered one foreign pistol and three rounds of bullet from the spot.

Nizam was wanted in four cases with different police stations of the city, said the police.
