SC order on Fakhrul’s bail 13 July
Dhaka: The Supreme Court (SC) in Dhaka on Thursday again fixed 13 July for passing order on the government’s petition against a High Court order granting bail to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three violence cases.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, fixed the date.
Earlier on 5 July, the bench had fixed 8 July for giving the order but the hearing in the cases had been rescheduled for Thursday as the health reports of Fakhrul did not reach in time.
The court also directed that a five-member medical team, comprising two surgeons of vascular surgery, a respiratory medicine specialist, a medicine specialist and a cardiologist, be formed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital authorities to conduct Mirza Fakhrul’s treatment and a report on his physical condition be submitted by the team by 3:00pm on 12 July.
Fakhrul’s lawyer Ragib Rouf Chowdhury said as only cardiology reports were received so far and the vascular surgery reports were yet to reach hand, the court again ordered the BSMMU authorities to submit the remaining reports after being diagnosed by a five-member medical board.
On 28 June, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court turned down the government’s petition against a High Court order granting bail to Fakhrul.
Earlier on 18 June, the High Court granted bail to the BNP leader in the three cases for violence.
Two of the cases were filed with Paltan Police Station while another with Motijheel Police Station.
On 16 April, Mirza Fakhrul secured six months’ bail from HC in another case filed with Paltan Police Station on January 4 for allegedly carrying out arson attack and vandalism.
On the same day, the court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why Fakhrul should not be given bail in three other cases.
He was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital on 13 June following a HC order.
On 6 January, plainclothes police picked up Fakhrul as he came out of the Jatiya Press Club after nearly 25 hours of stay there following BNP’s announcement to observe January-5 as ‘Democracy Killing Day’, protesting the 10th parliamentary polls held on the day.
The BNP leader is now facing 79 cases.
