Chittagong: A Chittagong court acquitted three accused, including ex-Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, of Bijoy TV scam case quashing its proceedings on Thursday.

The two other accused are former chief executive officer of Chittagong City Corporation Imtiaz Hossain Chowdhury and former chief engineer Mokhtar Alam.

Special judge of Chittagong Division Ruhul Amin passed the order following the order of High Court to quash the case proceedings.

Rony Kumer Dey, a counsel of the accused, said the case was quashed and the accused got acquittal as per the High Court order.

Bijoy TV went on air on 16 December 2006.

However, the then government on 8 March 2007 gave a notice to the city corporation authorities and stopped its operation seeking explanation for launching a television without permission of the government.

Later, on 27 May, the Anti Corruption Commission filed a graft case against five people, including then CCC mayor Mohiuddin, with Kotoali Police Station of Chittagong for going on air costing Tk 1.47 crore of CCC and without any tender.

On 17 January 2008 the HC, upon a petition, stayed further proceedings of Bijoy TV scam case against the CCC Mayor and issued a rule to explain why the case should not be quashed.
