25 killed, over 100 hurt in stampede for Zakat clothes

Mymensingh: At least 25 people were killed and more than 100 people were injured in a rush for receiving clothes distributed as Zakat by a private organisation at Atul Chakrabarty road in Mymensingh in the early hours of Friday.
Four among the injured are in critical condition and admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. The other injured left the hospital after receiving primary treatment.
Ten among the deceased are Rupali, Hena, Shahnaz, Fatema, Rezia, Rubia, Sufia, Shamima, her daughter Sakhina, and granddaughter Lamia.
The Mymensingh Zilla police said 24 people were killed in a stampede as thousands of destitute people crowded for receiving zakat clothes at an industrialist Shamim Talukder’s Nurani Tobacco Factory at about 5:00am.
Additional police have been deployed in the area immediately after the incident.
However, police arrested eight persons including the owner of the factory Md Shamim in this connection. The arrestees are Shamim’s younger brother Hedayet Hossain, manager Iqbal Hossain, Arman Hossain, Alamgir Hossain, Arshadul, driver Parvez, and Abdul Hamid, an employee of the factory.
Deputy commissioner Mustakim Billah Faruki said the victims’ families will get Tk 5,000-10,000 compensation each.
A three-member investigation committee led by Dhaka range police addition deputy inspector general Shafiqur Islam has been formed in this connection. The committee has been ordered to submit probe report by three working days.
