Permission must for Zakat distribution in city: DMP
Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah on Saturday said DMP permission will be required from now on if any individual or organisation wants to distribute Zakat through any event in Dhaka city.
The DMP commissioner said this while taking to reporters after distributing Zakat clothes among poor and underprivileged people at Purana Paltan Community Centre in the city.
The DMP permission has been made mandatory prior to Zakat distribution in the wake of a horrific stampede in Mymensingh that left 27 people dead on Friday morning.
He said police give security to Zakat seekers as well as Zakar providers during its distribution in cash or kinds.
‘If any individual arranges any event for distributing Zakat in the capital without DMP permission, the person would be held responsible for any untoward incident, and legal action will be taken against him of her accordingly,’ the DMP commissioner said.
About hawker eviction from footpaths, Asaduzzaman said the DMP will start its eviction drive in this regard after eid.
Earlier on Friday, the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) asked people to seek police help during the distribution of Zakat clothes to avoid any untoward incident.
At least 27 poor women and children were killed and 50 others injured in the stampede as they crowded for receiving Zakat clothes distributed by local Nurani Jarda Factory near Mymensingh municipality office on Friday morning.
