Lawmaker’s son Rony chargesheeted

Dhaka: Detective Branch (DB) on Tuesday pressed charges against Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan, in a case filed for shooting two people to death with his firearm in the capital’s New Eskaton area.
DB sub-inspector and also the investigation officer of the case Depak Kumar Das submitted the chargesheet against Rony under section 302 of penal code to the general recording officer Mahamudur Rahman at about 1:25pm.
Manirul Islam, joint commissioner of DB police, said there are 37 witnesses against Rony.
‘Although Rony did not make any confessional statement before the court, we hope that we will be able to probe the court that he is directly involved in the killing,’ he said.
However, we requested the court to make Rony’s three friends and driver Imran as eye witnesses of the case as they have already made their confessional statements, he said.
Besides, after conducting the ballistic test it was found that bullets recovered from the victims’ bodies were fired from the licensed gun of Rony.
On 13 April, Rony, said to be a drug addict, allegedly opened fire on people indiscriminately near Janakantha Bhaban in New Eskaton area from his car, leaving two people—rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and Janakantha’s auto-rickshaw driver Yakub—injured with bullets.
Hakim succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on 15 April, while Yeakub died at the hospital on 23 April.
On 15 April, a case was filed with Ramna Police Station against unidentified people in this connection.
On 1 June, law enforces arrested Rony from his Dhanmondi residence in connection with the firing.
